Author Highlight- Sarah Billington

We had a few authors in A Taste Test who were unable to do the blog tour due to scheduling conflicts. However, I still wanted to highlight them here on my website and introduce you to their works.

Today I am highlighting Sarah Billington, author of The Kiss Off.

When sixteen year old Poppy Douglas writes a song about her ex-boyfriend Cam and ex-friend Nikki, she has no idea that her heartbreak is about to go global.

A local band picks up her song from Youtube and soon she’s along for the ride with her own fanbase as they blow up on the local club scene and hit the international charts. Though it turns out leaving Cam behind isn’t as easy as she had hoped.

Tangled in a web of unfinished homework, ill-considered sexting and a new lead-singer boyfriend, Poppy has a choice to make between the ex that inspired it all and the rock God whose poster lines the inside of half the lockers at school. But as she struggles to keep her emotional dirty laundry private, she learns that the truth can be hard to find when your life is in the headlines.

Sarah Billington is an Australian writer and editor who likes to write stories with love, laughs, suspense and zombies. Sometimes all in the same story. Her favouritest thing to write about are those horrendously awkward moments that come with being a teenager. Or a human being. Sarah was extremely accident-prone and klutzy as a kid and teen, so her cup runneth over with experiences of horrendously awkward moments to draw from in her writing. Thankfully, she has grown out of her klutziness. Mostly. She is, however, still an embarrassment.

She loves a variety of random things, which include doggies (hers as well as yours), Swing Dancing, Ice Hockey, Roller Derby and she is a bit obsessive about paranormal investigation shows and channel E!. She writes light-hearted works under Sarah Billington, and darker, scarier and more torturous stories under her pen name, Edwina Ray. She also runs an editing, cover design and ebook formatting company Billington Media.

You can purchase The Kiss Off here. Visit Sarah’s website at http://sarahbillington.weebly.com/

I have to give Sarah a special shout-out, because she was the one who included me in the sampler when she first conceived the idea. This was such a great experience for me to “meet” other authors. I put that in quotes because we have never met face to face, but we have communicated through email and facebook and our work. I have learned so much from these amazing women. Thank you, Sarah!

A Taste Test Blog Tour- Melissa Pearl

Today wraps up the Taste Test blog tour. I hope you have enjoyed meeting each of these great authors. Remember, A Taste Test is FREE. You can download it here.

Last, but certainly not least, on our tour is the amazing Melissa Pearl, who took over the editing, formating and lauching of A Taste Test. I appreciate her hard work SO very much! I hope you will click on over to each of the blogs to learn more about Melissa after reading the post here. Melissa Pearl is the co-author of Forbidden Territory.

For Melissa’s post today, she answers FOUR RANDOM QUESTIONS:

1.  If you could have an psychic power, what would it be?

Hmmmm – telepathy would be pretty cool. Knowing what other people were thinking would be amazing… unless they were thinking bad stuff about you, I guess 🙂

I’d love to know what was going through my kids’ minds sometimes. That would be very entertaining, I’m sure 🙂

2.  What is your favorite “mythical” creature?

I know this is super old school, but I used to watch a movie when I was a kid called The Never Ending Story. There was a dragon in that called Falkor, who was SO cool. The main character rode on his back and they flew around together. It was so awesome.

3.  Do you believe in ghosts? Why or why not?

No, but I believe in spirits… like angels and demons. I like to think that I am protected by angels 🙂

4.  If you could move anywhere in the world, where would you move and why?

Oooo – that’s hard. There are SOOOOO many awesome places in this world. My husband and I spent 9 months driving around the States and Canada. I would quite happily move back there again. I really love North America. (BTW- Melissa is a kiwi. That means she’s from New Zealand.)

I’m actually moving to China in August. My husband has got a job over there so we are going to be shifting for a few years. I’m really nervous about it, but I know it will be a fun adventure and I’ll get to see some awesome stuff.

Thank you to Melissa for posting here today, and for all her hard work in launching the sampler. I hope to receive a post card from China this fall!

A Taste Test Blog Tour- LM Preston

This brings us to day five of the Taste Test blog tour. Today I am happy to introduce you to LM Preston, author of The Pack- Retribution.

TASTE TEST BLOG TOUR: Who is your favorite character you’ve ever written and why?

LM PRESTON: I LOVE WRITING A MALE!

Although my initial inclination is to write as a male, I still have tons of challenges trying to portray male characters correctly. Since my career as an engineer is a male dominated profession, it’s been a great source of subject matter to use when writing.

Male character’s experience emotion, they just show it in different ways than females. Not to mention their dialogue is different from most females. Those subtle differences a writer has to take the time to notice. Society has certain expectations and rules for males and writing as a male should fit those boundaries – otherwise, the reader will notice.

Aadi was easy for me to write, because I have a son that’s the same age as my main character. My kid somewhat fits Aadi’s character profile because he’s a jock and a good student. Most writers pull their character profiles from someone they know, researched, or imagined.

When I write in boy, it’s like I’m acting out that character’s adventure and it becomes my own. Writing Aadi was exciting to for so many reasons. I was able to shed my daily makeup as a girl, and for the months it took me to write him – I was able to be young again, strong, and powerful. Not just young, but be a boy.

I LOVE WRITING STRONG GIRLS

Writing a female main character allows me to express deeper emotions, to be what I am everyday – a girl. You know what? For me, it’s difficult, because writing as a boy I get to imagine a totally different persona. I’m a girl, and being a girl in my writing isn’t quite so exciting. So I cheat, I make her into a tough girl.

My main character in The Pack, Shamira, was especially challenging to write. I had to make it fun, because if my characters aren’t interesting, it’s hard for me to write them. So, I gave her it all – cool girly clothes, a motorcycle named Pearl, and a too die for hottie on her tracks. She’s a girl – but she kicks major booty and is somewhat cocky. I gave her outer appearance a feminine softness. However, she’s a trained fighter that carries herself with the sureness of a male that can protect himself.

PULLING IT TOGETHER

All of my books are composed of a strong array of male and female characters. I love to write with multiple lead characters. Why? Because when I was a kid, I loved to have friends around. Also, it allows me to write characters that are both male and female yet bonded together in friendship.
